1 :1

Tell me about solitude, yours, and I’ll tell you mine -
how it is during the long nights when the earth sleeps
and the trees are silent shadows of themselves.

How, on those nights when I feel crushed and without hope,
I get up from the floor where I’ve lain head in arms,
to stand by my window and look at the stars, watch the moon

riding among clouds. - remind myself how the earth bears us
day after day, never striving against the edges of itself;
how it turns and turns again, gently, on its axis.

I imagine the pale approach of dawn, light rising over the hills,
how a little wind, soft as the sigh of God, might touch my skin
and the birds will sing for us all once more.

Who of us has not endured these nights besieged by loneliness,
each of us in our own little kingdom, waiting for reprieve?
