THE GIRL WHO LOVED FIRE

Did your eyes see the scorched-black grass

Before you struck the torching match?

You were the girl who loved fire,

Desired flames in childhood games.

You climbed the hill of school-break green,

So keen to spread a silent scream

Of clouds of smoke, red-feathered waves,

And see the sky choke on your work.

The thrill of its rage, spilling down,

Unkempt, untamed, totally free

To scold and tar-scald summer fields

Way above the grey-coloured town.

Did you love the art of your act,

The canvas of Van Gogh madness

Burning away at your boredom

And singeing the flush of moments?

Did you love the blushing rush, the heat

Like a breath direct from the sun,

That warmed you like touches of guilt,

Unmasking your innocent face?
