Joan Ellis

Romford, Essex, United Kingdom

Joan Ellis lives in Collier Row, Romford and is happily retired.  She enjoys taking holidays, some of which have given her inspiration for her poetry writing.  Having left school with no qualifications, Joan decided that, at the age of 65, and finding herself with a lot of spare time, she would undertake an Open University degree course. This she completed in 2015 and was very proud to receive a Bachelor of Arts Open degree.  Joan has always been interested in literature, enjoying reading from an early age. Whilst completing a Creative Writing Module as part of the Open University Degree, she gained an affinity to and a love of poetry, which led to her enjoyment of writing poetry.  Joan enjoys writing in different styles, from nonsense rhymes to love stories.

THE DAY TRIP

I’m going to the seaside

I’m going on a train

and when I get to Hastings

I hope it doesn’t rain

I’ll pack my jelly sandals

I’ll pack my shorts and towel

I’m ready for a paddle

if the sea is not too cold

My friend has also come along
although only for the ride
she doesn’t much like soggy sand
and she doesn’t like the tide

I’ll persuade her in a moment
to sit down upon the rug
I know she won’t be happy
but I’ll content her with a hug

Then all too soon it’s time to go
we hurry from the beach
sticks of rock and souvenirs
cluttering our bags

We reach the station just in time
the train is pulling in

‘Phew, that was close’,

as we jump in and settle in our seats

What a joyous day it’s been
we’ll have to come again
maybe in a week or two

We hope it doesn’t rain
