Penny Dopson is a published poet and a member of Ware Poets. Her poems have appeared in South, Iota, Spokes, several Ware Poets anthologies and was commended in the 2017 Ware Poetry Competition. Her first collection  Dancing Against the Wind was published at the end of 2018 by Rockingham Press.

Hot House

 

This afternoon, this almost too hot afternoon

I am entering the spare room

where in April and lockdown I planted treasure

a daughter sent in the post.

 

Seeds - twelve gold tomato, six slim cucumber;

watching over them constantly like babies

I feed and water, check their growth.

 

On the windowsill, the cucumbers

are putting up green parasols against

the scorching rays of the sun,

over their yellow star flowers and inch long fruit.

 

Breathing in their scent

I am back in Granny’s greenhouse,

the brilliant sun, heat hitting, that distinctive green aroma,

smell of damp earth after we’ve watered them.

 

The door left open.
